Job Description for a Competitive Intelligence Manager

Competitive intelligence (CI) is a fairly new concept.The process of gathering information about one’s competitors that could impact the success of a company is important enough for companies to hire CI employees that are specially trained and skilled.

Competitive Intelligence Manager Defined

The Competitive Intelligence Manager is responsible for all competitive research conducted on behalf of the company. A manager may or may not have direct reports, and is usually trained in research and marketing skills.

Analyze Strategies and Trends

A CI manager will analyze competitive market strategies through analysis of related products and services. He must try to identify future trends by watching the new product roll-out of competitors and by keeping abreast of consumer reports on future needs.

Research Appropriate Data

A CI manager must search available industry reports and readily available public information to reveal valuable information on such things as a changing of the guard or new blood. He will collect data regarding mergers, acquisitions, research, development, and investment tactics, so he can help position the company to make organizational changes.

Create Business Intelligence Tools

A CI manager must create the necessary business intelligence tools (such as comprehensive databases and spreadsheets) to provide the best sources for information. He must use the tools to generate reports, dashboards, or other required outputs.

Generate Custom Reporting Systems

A good CI manager must prioritize the most important data and generate the appropriate custom reports for management's review and use. He must include supportive documentation to demonstrate the report's authenticity and the timeliness of the information.
