List of Safety-Sensitive Type Jobs

According to the state of Minnesota's Office of the Revisor of Statutes, safety-sensitive jobs are those in which alcohol or drug use could threaten the safety of any other person in the workplace. Some states clearly define which types of jobs are safety-sensitive and which are not. For example, the state of Florida lists dozens of these positions.

Registered Nurse

Within the field of health care, the registered nurse (R.N.) plays a key role in the ongoing health and recovery of medical patients. Nurses occupy a particularly safety-sensitive position because they are the primary care providers for people who may be in positions of extremely poor health who need to be closely monitored.

Alcohol or drug use among nurses can impair their judgment and ability to administer the proper type of care to patients. Nurses also have access to drugs they regularly administer for patients; drug usage among nurses can call into question their credibility to provide this type of care, especially if they have developed an addiction to a drug they may have access to.

The job outlook for nurses is expected to remain very good through 2018 with 22 percent job growth. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median salary for nurses of $62,450 per year as of May 2008.

Police Officer

Police officers also occupy safety-sensitive positions since their primary function is to protect the safety of the general public.

Police officers spend portions of their day in their patrol cars driving the streets within their jurisdiction. Any alcohol or drug use could hamper the safety of other drivers and pedestrians.

Because police officers may also be called upon to participate in drug busts as well, they, like nurses, may have access to addictive substances. Addictive drug use by a police officer could call into question his credibility as someone who defends the public good.

Job growth for police officers is expected to remain steady at about a 10 percent increase in the number of jobs from 2008 to 2018. Police officers made a median salary of $51,410 as of May 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Construction Manager

Construction managers also have safety-sensitive positions. Construction managers oversee both small- and large-scale building projects and may have several or even dozens of people working under their direct supervision.

Construction managers also tend to have their hands in all aspects of a construction project. Because building construction often involves the use of heavy machinery and materials, it is imperative that construction managers avoid the use of any alcohol or drugs while on the job.

Construction managers may be self-employed in many cases, but others work for government agencies and in other arenas of the public sector.

The job outlook for construction managers is expected to remain above average with job growth of 17 percent from 2008 to 2018. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median pay for construction managers ranges from $74,770 to $81,590, depending on the field of construction (May, 2008).
