What to Do After a Job Offer

After two or three long and grueling interviews, you finally receive a job offer, and you are on top of the world. Competition can be fierce, so it's natural to get heady with elation when you get an offer. Still, there are some things to consider before throwing that celebration bash.

Negotiation

Before you seal the offer by accepting, think deeply about it. See if it pays within your field's normal range and if the benefits are what you need. Don't get so caught up in the "job" that you forget about what it should pay, or if it meets your needs. If the offer falls short of your expectations, make a counteroffer, because chances are, unless you ask for more money, you will not get it. If your prospective employer refuses and will not budge, see if you can live with the original the offer. If you can't, you may need to start looking elsewhere.

Pros/Cons

Weigh the pros and cons before accepting the offer. Think about the offer as a whole, and not just in a paycheck sense. Is there room for growth with the company? Is it a stable company? Are there good benefits (health, vacation, tuition reimbursement)? Ask about signing bonuses, and relocation costs, if your new job is in another city---your new employer may be willing to pick up the tab. If the company falls short in one area, see if there are areas that exceed your expectations.

Daily Tasks

Re-examine your job responsibilities. Make sure you are comfortable with them before accepting the job offer. If you aren't, and you take the job, you will negatively contribute to your employer's turnover rate and your job-hopping rate. Regardless of how good the benefits are and how mighty the paycheck promises to be, if you are unhappy with your job duties your life can become miserable. Think this over carefully before taking the plunge.
