What to Wear for Job Hunting

Although we are often told, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” each of us has an immediate reaction to the people we see around us. When you are job hunting, your appearance plays a huge role in how potential employers perceive you. The key is to dress as though you already have the job you are pursuing.

Step It Up

Avoid very casual clothes such as jeans, tank tops, sandals or shorts. Dress up, not down. For jobs that don’t require formal dress, dress a few notches above the clothing you might normally wear in that job. Be sure your pants and dress shirts are nearly pressed. You want to appear that you are ready to begin the job that day. Visit the website for the company to which you are applying to get a feel for the standard dress code before you attend an interview. Consider purchasing a business suit for job searching.

Be Conservative

This is not the time to experiment with the latest fashion trend or to wear revealing clothing. More conservative styles are particularly important for office jobs and in larger, more formal organizations.

Careful with Accessories

What you wear does not end with your clothing. A little goes a long way when it comes to colognes, perfumes, make-up and jewelry. If your ears are pierced several times, wear only one pair of earrings. If you have other body piercings or tattoos, cover them with long sleeves and remove pierced jewelry other than earrings. Keep your fingernails neatly trimmed and wear clear or neutral nail polish.

Personal Hygiene

Careful grooming and personal hygiene are a must. It will not matter what you are wearing if the rest of your appearance is sloppy. If you have not cut your hair recently, get a trim. If you have facial hair, make sure you are clean-shaven and neat. If you have long hair, consider pulling it back and out of your face. Bathe and brush your teeth every day you are out on the hunt.
