Write a Job Objective on a Resume for an Automotive Technician

The resume objective is your opportunity to summarize what you can bring to a job. It is where you briefly explain what automotive repair experience and education you have and tell the employer what specific job you want. It is also where you concisely state your qualifications and certifications. Keep your objective under three lines of text to make it easy for employers to read and know what kind of job you are looking for.

Summarize your experience and qualifications at the beginning of your objective. For example, if you are certified as an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), you might state, "ASE Certified automotive mechanic with five years of experience diagnosing, repairing and maintaining automotive systems seeks position as lead shift technician." Stating your experience in your objective lets an employer immediately know how well you are qualified from the first lines of your resume.

State what position you want in the objective. Avoid being vague in your objective. Do not, for example, write, "Seeking position where I can grow professionally in a team-oriented environment." Tell the employer exactly what job you want instead of leaving him wondering if you would even want the types of positions he has open. If you are replying to a specific job advertisement, insert the title of the job into your objective exactly as it is written. If you are looking for a more general position, include the title you are most interested in working. For example, you might write that you seek a position as an entry-level technician.

State how you can benefit the employer's business in your objective. Avoid focusing on what type of work environment you want or what an employer can do for you. For example, write, "Automotive mechanic seeks technician position where my experience and training in hybrid technology can increase the customer base of the repair facility."

Mention other qualifications you have in your resume objective that relate to being an automotive technician. For example, you might include your excellent communication skills in explaining customers' vehicle problems and repairs to them, or your reputation for honest dealings with all customers. Also, include information on specific make and model systems training and experience you have.
